In 1772, King Carlos III established the ETSIN (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Navales – School of Naval Architecture and Oceanic Engineering) in Ferrol, Spain. In 1933, the ETSIN was relocated to Madrid, and in 1971, it became an integral part of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The ETSIN offers a comprehensive education in maritime engineering. Its curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including ship design, naval architecture, marine propulsion systems, and offshore engineering. Students benefit from state-of-the-art laboratories, simulators, and research facilities. The school emphasises hands-on learning, with practical training opportunities aboard ships and in shipyards. Currently, the ETSIN enrols approximately 800 students, with around 130 new students and 55 graduate students joining each year. Additionally, the ETSIN is home to a faculty of 25 full and associate professors, 60 lecturers and assistant professors. Furthermore, the institution hosts six research groups: CEHINAV (Model Basin Research), GIT-ERM (Marine Renewable Energies), DEMH (Hybrid Structures and Materials), Advanced Nuclear Fission Systems, Geometry and Applications, and PICOHIMA (Fuel Cells, Hydrogen Tech, and Reciprocating Engines). Apart from the syllabus offered in the EMship+ Master Program, the School of Naval Architecture and Oceanic Engineering offers other Master Program on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Many choose to cross the city on bicycles, which can be rented at reasonable prices through initiatives like “Madrid on Wheels.” Additionally, the city boasts a well-connected public transportation system, including buses and trams, ensuring swift access to every corner of this bustling metropolis, even during late-night weekend escapades.
Throughout the year, Madrid hosts various cultural events. From the celebrations of San Isidro in May to the world-renowned Madrid International Film Festival in September, something exciting is always happening. Sports fans can catch a Real Madrid or Atlético de Madrid football match at iconic stadiums like Santiago Bernabéu or Wanda Metropolitano. The city’s vibrant nightlife, featuring flamenco shows, live music venues, and countless bars, ensures that Madrid remains alive long into the night, making it a true cultural and leisure hub in Europe.
Housing Facilities
The university offers a range of housing options to meet the diverse needs and preferences of its international students. UPM provides on-campus accommodation in modern and well-maintained residences, encouraging a sense of community and promoting cultural exchange.
The most effective approach for securing accommodation is to visit the official UPM website under the “Alojamiento/Accommodation” section. Also, The Student Accommodation Office (Oficina de Alojamiento de Estudiantes) can be visited, where information about various housing options will be provided. Alternatively, the Student Mobility Office (Oficina de Movilidad de Estudiantes) or the International Relations Office (Relaciones Internacionales) will assist in finding accommodation.
